Les propréteurs sont des magistrats sortis de charge, qui sont nommés gouverneurs des provinces romaines impériales. Le Sénat déterminait les postes à pourvoir avant les élections, et, immédiatement après, les magistrats élus avaient leur province tirée au sort.
